My Blogging Experience

I have thoroughly enjoyed this blogging assignment. Many times I have thought about the prompts, and how I would feel if we just had to do a Canvas discussion post with no images or links, instead of a blog. I can definitely say I would not have enjoyed that nearly as much as I've enjoyed blogging. It is a fun and multimodal way to express thoughts and add personal touches along the way. This idea of students creating a blog is something I will be keeping in mind for my future students as I continue to pursue my teaching career.  The post that I feel is the most professional would be my first blog post . In this specific post I connect the readings in an in depth thoughtful way. I felt the way I spoke on technology benefits and deficits in the classroom was written more “professionally” than any other post I have created. I think this is because I really immersed myself into those readings and had a lot to say, as well as this being my first blog post, I took less risks earlier on...

Water Narratives as a Multimodal Response

I read the book Water Walkers by Carol Trembath for this multi-part assignment. Here is my mini multimodal response to this eco-narrative that I chose to focus on. I decided to make a public service announcement style poster because while reading this book, it had elements of a PSA in the message of the book. Although not in a traditional way, this book urges the care needed to keep our water source healthy for generations to come. I felt the theme of the book was along the lines of doing everything you can to save our water, and to let others know to do the same. That is what made me decide a PSA poster would go well with the book.  While creating this poster, I realized I do not believe I have ever created a PSA. Perhaps I did in middle or high school, but either way, I do not recall ever making one. I did some basic Google research on what should be included in a PSA and went from there. I ended up using Canva (here is a beginner's guide to Canva) which I have only used a coupl...

Writing Coach Experience

Becoming a writing coach for high school students has been an enjoyable learning experience for me. This is my first time doing something like tutoring and it has been a great exposure to this type of writing work. I have especially enjoyed reading the students' work itself, and learning from them along the way. While giving feedback to these students, I have used multiple of the course readings to help craft replies to the writers. The two that have really helped me have been from the book Tutoring Writing by McAndrew & Reigstad, specifically chapters 3 and 6. Chapter 6 really shaped my ideas on what types of questions to ask while giving feedback. This chapter has questions such as “what is the central issue of your piece” and “what do you want the reader to walk away with” (25). These questions as well as the section on student centered tutoring affected how I give feedback to the students. I think it is very important that students ask the questions and get the answers the...

Aspects Of Digital Storytelling

I definitely have experience with digital storytelling, but mostly non academic. When I was young, my brother Nathan and I used to make Youtube videos. These would always just be goofy videos of us dressed up being silly. We also would record CD’s of us covering songs together, we wouldn't post these but still used digital media to create them. We also made a skit series of our pillow pets, Rex the dog and Hippo the hippo. These also were not posted but we spent a lot of time making them on our Grandpas iPad. When I got a little older I wanted to be a Youtuber- like every 11 year old girl watching Bethany Mota (Here’s a link to an interview with her at her prime time of fame) I would film videos on my iPod and edit them with iMovie. Although I had these “skills”/ experience, I never really got to use these media in school at the time. For academics, in high school we got more freedom with digital storytelling. Making videos was an option for a few assignments, like the news stor...

The Way I Write

My writing process is something I have not put much thought into, until after these readings. Underneath a writer's work, there are so many variables that make it what it is. The Flower and Hayes article states that we can best describe writing as collections of unique thoughts from the writer, including processes of planning, coordination, and effectiveness.  My personal process is a lot of trial and error. I do plan out my writing, for example, if I am writing a paper I usually jot down the main point of each paragraph I will write. Once I begin writing, I usually just let my thoughts flow as they come, then revise them after. With word choice, I often find myself correcting words in my head, with words that would be of higher quality. In fact, I just did that. Where I wrote "of higher quality" I originally had the word "better" but I thought describing it as higher quality would be more beneficial to my writing. If I do not like the word I used and want a bet...

Who is Grace?

Hi! I’m Grace Willer, a junior student at the University of Milwaukee. I am a secondary English major, and can’t wait to teach middle and high school students English! I am very excited to be working with you, and would like to share more about myself with you. I am a big fan of reading, but I wasn’t always that way. I used to struggle to really get into reading, but when I discovered poetry that related to my life, I got into reading and literature. Since then I've loved reading and writing my own poetry. A lot of my reading of poetry actually takes place on apps like TikTok and Pinterest. I love scrolling through and finding new work I would have never seen without social media. Other than online, I do love reading actual books. A few of my favorites are shown in my about me collage below.  I decided to become an education major because I love the overall learning environment of schools. I can't wait to become a teacher and get to teach students and work with them every day. ...

Technology In My Life

While completing the three readings for this week, many thoughts of my schooling experience, as well as the experience of others (especially future students of mine) came to mind. These articles all spoke on multimodal media and its use in classrooms. Starting with my personal experience. I have been using technology in schools for as long as I can remember. In middle school, we would use iPads and Chromebooks to play educational games and do other assignments. While this is technology, there was not much transmedia navigation taught or emphasized. We still mostly completed work the “old fashioned way”, textbooks and worksheets. Once I got to high school, technology advanced and multimedia use became more prioritized. I remember a project I did in my junior year where we got into groups and were assigned a topic to record a news broadcast on. We all had to work together and even got to use a greenscreen as well as edit the video ourselves. This, I believe, is a great way to conduct edu...
